Hal Guthrie grew up in Jasper, Alabama and graduated from Auburn University. In 1965 Hal opened a drive-in restaurant in Haleyville, Alabama. Hal came into his restaurant in 1978 and announced to his wife, Melissa, and four children that they were going to begin serving chicken fingers. At this time, he knew it would be necessary to have the best sauce available to accompany his unique breading blend.

Kenney Moore opened the very first Hwy55 in a mall in small-town North Carolina in 1991. It was called Andy’s Cheesesteaks & Cheeseburgers at the time, and its beginnings were humble: Kenney cooked every burger by himself from morning ’til night. And this was in full view of his customers. He couldn’t afford a traditional restaurant kitchen.

Nearly three decades ago, a dentist from Oxford, Mississippi had a vision to turn an abandoned movie-set diner into a small, yet charming, neighborhood restaurant & gathering place. That vision became a reality when the first McAlister’s opened its doors in 1989. The menu then would still feel familiar today packed with the craveable sandwiches, spuds and salads they’re known for.

In 1990, in Statesboro, Ga., Zaxbys founders Zach McLeroy and Tony Townley decided to roll the dice on a new kind of restaurant. Chicken fingers… as a main course. It was bold. It was original. And it was the beginning of something that would change countless lives over the next three decades.

The very first Golden Fried Chicken was opened by Howard and Jacque Walker in San Marcos Texas on South LBJ Drive. Mr. Walker was a World War II Navy veteran, and Ms. Walker was a graduate of Southwest Texas State University with strong ties to San Marcos. The first location has long since closed and been relocated, but what was started in 1967 by Mr. & Mrs. Walker lives on today.
